Some people have a real passion for what they do, and there's no question Ray Bair, the former
director of cheese, wine, and specialty foods for Whole Foods Market, loves wine and cheese. Along with a huge selection of takeout cheeses, they offer sandwiches and other delectables. They also offer $60 wine and cheese pairings on a fairly regular basis, a little fun and education. Take-out lunch for two, about $20.00+

The Dining Room at the Ritz Carlton
600 Stockton Street (at Pine St)
San Francisco, CA 94108

Is Chef Ron Siegel the best chef in San Francisco? Maybe, but he's definitely one of the best chefs. The Dining Room offers classically French, Asian fusion inspired, and very artful cuisine.  You can choose the six course tasting menu for about $95 or the nine course tasting menu's for $120 or a more traditional first and second course menu.  They also offer about 1400 separate wines to choose from. An interesting alternative, also within the Ritz-Carlton San Francisco hotel, is there Sunday Jazz Brunch. Expect to spend over $350 for two. www.ritzcarltondiningroom.com   GMAP

He and his team prepare beautifully presented 3 ($74) 4 ($82) and 5 course ($94) fixed-price menus Along with an exceptional vegetarian menu. We recommend you choose the five course menu along with wine pairing for an additional $70. Two people should expect to spend about $400 for truly memorable experience.

Jeanne D’Arc
715 Bush Street (Cornell Hotel de France)
San Francisco, CA 94108   415-421 3154
Jeanne D’Arc is a typical Paris bistro found in the heart of San Francisco's Nob Hill
. The food is home-style Parisian including lamb shanks, duck confit, and other bistro treats. But best of all is their fixed-price four course menu for about $30.  Even better is their wine list and markups. We enjoyed a half bottle of
Veuve Clicquot Champagne for $25 and a half bottle of 2000 Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, for only $18.00. The food exceeded our expectations, and the wines were outstanding. Another great thing about this restaurant is being able to take the Powell cable car, exiting at Bush, and walk to this restaurant in about three minutes. Why drink and drive?  A recommended restaurant.  Dinner for two is about $110 with top wines - and a lot less if you don't drink - but that's no fun. www.cornellhotel.com/jeanne/index.shtml    GMAP

wine.  www.lafolie.com   GMAP

Masa's
6
48 Bush Street (between Chelsea Pl & Powell St)
San Francisco, CA 94108
415-989-7154
Masa's, located in the Executive Hotel Vintage Court, is quickly becoming a San Francisco dining landmark.  Chef Gregory Short worked as Chef de Partie and Sous Chef under Thomas Keller at The French Laundry for seven years and as Chef de Cuisine at Montage Resort and Spa in Laguna Beach before taking over at the kitchen in
Masa's. George is on his way to becoming one of California's, (and the world's) best chefs. The restaurant offers a three course fixed price for $69, four course for $83, six course for $90 and nine course for $120. They also offer an excellent six courses vegetarian menu. We recommend choosing the nine course tasting menu, unless of course your a vegan.  Either way, you will probably be very happy. Over $300 with wine for two. www.masasrestaurant.com  GMAP

Swan Oyster Depot
1517 Polk Street (between California St & Sacramento St)
San Francisco, CA 94109
415-673-1101
If you're in the mood for really fresh oysters,
crab salads, seafood or even just clam chowder, this is the place.  Be warned, it's very small - seats under 25 people, so you can expect to wait during busy times. This place has been around
for what seems like a century, and yet it's more popular than ever - but after your first visit you will understand why. Expect to pay about $70 for two for great seafood.
