Jersey Boys
Theater
This is the story of how a group of blue-collar boys from the wrong
side of the tracks became one of the biggest American pop music
sensations of all time, Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. They wrote
their own songs, invented their own sounds and sold 175 million
records worldwide - all before they were thirty. Jersey Boys
won the 2006 Tony Award for Best Musical and features such Four
Season's hits as "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Sherry," "Walk Like A Man,"
"Oh, What A Night," and "Can't Take My Eyes Off You." Jersey Boys
is presented as a part of the 2006-2007 Best of Broadway season,
brought to you by Citibank, under the direction of Carole Shorenstein
Hays.

Past Tents: The
Way We Camped
Museum
"Past Tents" is a humorous excursion through one of America's favorite
national pastimes. An affectionate portrait of early camping in the
West, this exciting new exhibition will lead visitors through the
historical camping experience, with tales of family outings, car
camping and a presentation of outdoor gear from the 19th and 20th
centuries.
The "Past Tents" exhibition offers an exceptional opportunity to view
treasured items from the collections of both the Bancroft Library and
the California Historical Society. Through materials such as
photographs, diaries, popular advertisements and family photo albums,
visitors can connect with a piece of the California experience
familiar to us all.
A new type of exhibition for the California Historical Society, "Past
Tents" is family oriented, interactive and dedicated to the essence of
the camping experience. Even its opening and closing dates - spring
and fall equinoxes - reflect the spirit of nature. Through
partnerships with recreation, youth and nature organizations, entirely
new audiences will be introduced to California history in a unique
way.

Women Breaking
Barriers: Women’s Music from 1964 to 1984
Museum
“Women Breaking Barriers” focuses on imagery of women artists from
1964 through 1984. Visual elements were an important part of Women’s
music, conveying as much information as song lyrics and melody. Often,
they reflected an ongoing dialogue between the ideological and
cultural values of creators and audiences. Through art, women found
ways to work reinforce, challenge, and subvert the changing values of
the Women’s music scene. Working within a rapidly evolving subculture,
the designers who created the visual stories of Women’s music
contributed to a powerful artistic legacy. The exhibit will present
the development of an art form in a historical context, examining how
the values and aesthetics of Women’s music shaped individual and
community identities.

Yoshitoshi's
Strange Tales
Museum
From
Edo to Meiji
presents a hundred prints by Taiso Yoshitoshi (1839–1892) dating from
the turbulent last decades of Edo Japan to the westernizing Meiji era.
The exhibition is built around two series that deal with the
supernatural, one from the beginning of Yoshitoshi’s career, the other
from the end—stylistically so different that they could be by
different artists. Sometimes considered ancestors of modern manga,
woodblock prints were known as ukiyo-e, pictures of the “floating
world” of entertainment, especially actors and courtesans. Yoshitoshi
preferred other subjects, including events from folklore and history,
often bloody. Colors are intense, gestures histrionic. In his later
designs Yoshitoshi moved beyond the swirl of momentous events to
portray human emotions with great psychological subtlety, which is his
most important contribution to ukiyo-e. Through the prints, a picture
emerges of traditional Japanese society moving at a breakneck speed
into the modern world.

Shi Guorui:
Reproduction and Refashioning
Museum
Beijing-based artist Shi Guorui creates large-scale pinhole
photographs and photograms, early photographic technologies that rely
on natural light and long exposure times. His works utilize iconic
locations in order to graft historical images onto contemporary
experiences. In conjunction with a grant from the For-Site Foundation,
Shi Guorui has created a series of new photographs that respond to the
de Young Museum as a building, location, and collection. The diverse
group of locations speaks to the history of the museum and its mission
as a repository of memory, as represented by collected objects.
Photographs created with his camera obscura include views from the de
Young observation deck, the Dutch Windmill in Golden Gate Park, the
prison on Alcatraz Island, and the site in Donner Pass that Albert
Bierstadt used in a painting of that subject on display in the de
Young's American art galleries.

Tezuka: The
Marvel of Manga
Museum
Regarded in Japan as “The God of Comics” and “The God of Animation,”
Osamu Tezuka (1928-1989) is heralded as an icon of the Japanese manga
(graphic novels) movement; acknowledged as an artistic master, and
revered as the figurehead of the manga and anime industries. Creating
over 700 manga titles during his lifetime, he is best known in the
West for his cartoons of Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion, which
were serialized for television in the 1960's. Tezuka’s work is
acclaimed for its complexity and originality and his drawings showcase
an extraordinary calligraphic dynamism. His prolific manga work
contains two main streams: manga ‘comic pictures’ for a youth
audience, including Astro Boy, Kimba and Princess Knight; and gekiga
‘drama pictures’—more seriously-toned, adult oriented narratives such
as Song of Apollo and Ludwig B, that stress realistic effect and
emotional impact.
This major exhibition—the first of its kind to be staged outside of
Japan––features more than 200 works including original drawings,
covers, and posters that trace the artist’s development, the
television and anime series inspired by his work, as well as his
adult-oriented manga, introducing Western audiences to the
complexities and extraordinary range of the manga form. An
accompanying resource room will offer activities and anime screenings.
The Asian Art Museum will serve as the only U.S. venue for the
exhibition.

Sculpture
Transformed: The Work of Majorie Schick
Museum
For decades, Marjorie Schick has been a pioneering force in the craft
field. Her vibrant, energetic pieces break through traditional
barriers of form, texture and color while sparking the human
imagination. Schick is best known for her brilliantly colored wearable
art constructions using non-traditional materials which are often
inspired by costumes from other cultures. Schick has explained her
work as "a sculptural statement that is complete when off the human
body, yet is constructed and exists because of the human body."

Hiroshi Sugimoto
Museum
Hiroshi Sugimoto (1948, Japan) is celebrated for his ongoing, multiple
series of haunting black-and-white photographs, which explore the
themes of time, memory, dreams, and natural histories. Working with a
large-format camera, Sugimoto creates richly detailed images that are
often suffused with expanses of light and space.
This exhibition is the first major survey of Sugimoto's work and is
co-organized by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington,
D.C., and the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo. Featuring approximately 120
photographs from 1976 to the present, it encompasses the entirety of
this celebrated artist's nearly 30-year career.
The exhibition will include examples of the series Dioramas and
Movie Theaters—views of natural history displays and the screens
and architecture of cinemas that Sugimoto began in the mid-1970s—as
well as images from Seascapes and Wax Portraits, started
in the 1980s and 1990s, respectively. The show also presents
Sea of Buddha,
1995, 48 photographs of Buddhist sculptures. Works from Sugimoto's
more recent Architecture series are featured, as are images from
Conceptual Forms, a series on which he is currently working.
