From Rembrandt to Thiebaud: A Decade of Collecting Works on Paper
Museum

The Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, founded in 1948 by Moore and Hazel Achenbach, is the Fine Arts Museums’ department of prints, drawings, and photographs. It is the largest American museum collection of its kind west of Chicago; works range from the Renaissance to contemporary art and also include Asian art. Over the past decade the department has acquired more than 6,600 works on paper through gift and purchase. There has not been an opportunity to display many of them until now. This exhibition of over 250 objects illustrates the breadth and depth of the department’s collecting activities over the past 10 years.
Shown for the first time will be drawings by Michelangelo Buonarroti, Anthonie Waterloo, Giacomo Balla, Edward Hopper, Hans Arp, Andy Warhol, and Wayne Thiebaud, along with prints by Federico Barocci, George Stubbs, John Constable, Paul Gauguin, Giorgio Morandi, Pablo Picasso, and Gerhard Richter. A special emphasis has been placed on the acquisition of photography, with important works by Carleton Watkins, Lewis Carroll, Imogen Cunningham, and Diane Arbus on display.
None of this overview exhibition would have been possible without the generosity of numerous individuals dedicated to the Museums. The major 1998 gift of the Reva and David Logan Collection of Illustrated Books and the establishment of a permanent book gallery at the Legion have transformed the direction of the collection. Special mention should be made of the continuing gift of an archive print from every published edition of Crown Point Press, the premier intaglio press in America, and the extraordinary philanthropy of the late Phyllis C. Wattis, who was responsible for the acquisition of a major early de Kooning drawing and the complete graphic arts archive of Ed Ruscha.

The Diane and Sandy Besser Collection
Museum

Renowned Santa Fe collector Sandy Besser has assembled an extraordinary array of objects in almost every conceivable medium. He long ago rejected arbitrary art world definitions such as “fine,” “folk,” or “craft” in favor of an all-encompassing worldview that judges objects from diverse cultures for their intrinsic visual merit. This exhibition features a selection of his finest objects, drawn from three major collection areas. An array of contemporary teapots documents the persistence and vitality of this ancient form, which was designed to hold the world’s most common beverage, but has been revitalized by artists associated with the studio crafts movement to hold artistic meaning as well. Featured contemporary drawings include works by established artists such as Roy de Forest, Enrique Chagoya, and Joseph Piccillo, as well as younger, emerging artists, whose works incorporate figuration, narrative content, and neo-surrealist imagery. A selection of African beadwork represents the evolution of traditional art forms into a contemporary medium with representations from the Pende, Yoruba, and Kuba societies. All of the featured works are current or future gifts to the Fine Arts Museums.

The Sculpture of Louise Nevelson: Constructing a Legend
Museum

Louise Nevelson’s life (1899–1988) and work are a story in sculpture. The story is a weaving together and intermingling of several histories: her personal history as a woman artist, the history of Jewish migration to this country, and the history of 20th-century art, including major movements such as Cubism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and Minimalism.

Although Nevelson’s work has been celebrated in numerous retrospectives, Louise Nevelson: A Story in Sculpture is the first comprehensive presentation of her work that includes her works on paper, which are intrinsic to her sculptural output. This exhibition, organized by The Jewish Museum, New York, features approximately 60 objects including both sculpture and works on paper. Throughout the exhibition, Nevelson’s works in both mediums will be juxtaposed to highlight the artist’s inclination for various media, enabling viewers to trace the common themes that recur in her half-century of production. The works on view are drawn from private and public collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Walker Art Center, and The Jewish Museum. The exhibition will be on view at The Jewish Museum, New York, from 4 May through 16 September 2007.

The scope of the exhibition, which is arranged chronologically, spans her earliest objects, a group of self-portraits from the 1930s, to large-scale works on contemporary subjects that she produced in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as another group of self-portraits, created in the 1980s during the artist’s last decade. The Sculpture of Louise Nevelson: Constructing a Legend is accompanied by a full-color catalogue with essays by exhibition curator Brooke Kamin Rapaport, art critic and scholar Arthu
