Coral Reef
Museum
View a two-story, 20,000-gallon coral reef tank that features dozens of
tropical reef fish as well as a wide variety of colorful corals.
Children will especially love seeing the common clownfish (often called
Nemo) and the blue tang (otherwise known as Dory). Academy biologists
are using this enormous tank to test ideas for the even larger
225,000-gallon coral reef tank that will be a part of the New Academy
when it opens in Golden Gate Park in 2008.
Helpful Information:
Wetsuit-clad divers enter the tank every Monday and Wednesday afternoon
at 2:00pm to care for the corals and clean the tank walls. During this
20-minute dive, the biologist will clean the tank windows and feed the
anemones and fish. A second biologist will be on hand to answer
questions.

Beach Blanket Babylon
Theater
Steve Silver's Beach Blanket Babylon is the longest running, hit
musical revue in theatre history. The Show premiered at the Savoy Tivoli
in San Francisco's North Beach, June, 1974. Beach Blanket Babylon
is a zany musical spoof of pop culture with extravagant costumes and
outrageously huge hats. The Show's immediate popularity forced it to
move to larger quarters at Club Fugazi, a North Beach landmark, where it
eventually found a permanent home. Now in its 30th year of sold-out
performances, Beach Blanket Babylon is an internationally
acclaimed San Francisco institution. Beach Blanket Babylon in
addition to the more than 10,000 performances in San Francisco, has
performed for wildly enthusiastic audiences during its London and Las
Vegas engagements. Beach Blanket Babylon continually evolves in
its hilarious parodies of popular icons, updating its spoofs and adding
new characters, songs, and send-ups throughout the year.
Please note, due to liquor license, persons under 21 are not admitted to
evening performances. Minors are welcome to attend Sunday matinees.

What's Wrong With This
Car?
Museum
Listen with the ears of an auto mechanic to interpret what problems
exist in this new interactive exhibit, which includes the front half of
a new car, encourages visitors to sharpen their listening skills by
having them focus on sound as a source of information about an
underlying problem, just as a trained mechanic does. With practice,
listeners can distinguish the auditory nuances that distinguish a
sticking valve from a bad set of brakes. And they also hone another kind
of skill: translating imitations of sounds, made by customers' lips and
tongues, into the metallic clicks and whirrs of pistons, calipers, and
cams.

Evidence of Artists at
Work: M. Lee Fatherree Photographs, 1978-2007
Museum
Lee Fatherree has crafted the primary visual records of art objects for
catalogues, exhibitions, and curatorial records in the San Francisco Bay
Area for more than 25 years. During that time artists, museums, and
collectors have sought his visionary photographs, which are widely
published. Less well known are his personal photographs of artists in
their studios. This exhibition will focus on his art by presenting both
his well known images of art objects, as well as his personal
photographs of artists at work. A selection of objects that have been
photographed by Fatherree will also be included.
