Museum

View a two-story, 20,000-gallon coral reef tank that features dozens of tropical reef fish as well as a wide variety of colorful corals. Children will especially love seeing the common clownfish (often called Nemo) and the blue tang (otherwise known as Dory). Academy biologists are using this enormous tank to test ideas for the even larger 225,000-gallon coral reef tank that will be a part of the New Academy when it opens in Golden Gate Park in 2008.

Helpful Information: Wetsuit-clad divers enter the tank every Monday and Wednesday afternoon at 2:00pm to care for the corals and clean the tank walls. Beach Blanket Babylon
Theater

Steve Silver's Beach Blanket Babylon is the longest running, hit musical revue in theatre history. The Show premiered at the Savoy Tivoli in San Francisco's North Beach, June, 1974. Beach Blanket Babylon is a zany musical spoof of pop culture with extravagant costumes and outrageously huge hats. The Show's immediate popularity forced it to move to larger quarters at Club Fugazi, a North Beach landmark, where it eventually found a permanent home. Now in its 30th year of sold-out performances, Beach Blanket Babylon is an internationally acclaimed San Francisco institution. Beach Blanket Babylon in addition to the more than 10,000 performances in San Francisco, has performed for wildly enthusiastic audiences during its London and Las Vegas engagements. Beach Blanket Babylon continually evolves in its hilarious parodies of popular icons, updating its spoofs and adding new characters, songs, and send-ups throughout the year.

Please note, due to liquor license, persons under 21 are not admitted to evening performances. Minors are welcome to attend Sunday matinees.

What's Wrong With This Car?
Museum

Listen with the ears of an auto mechanic to interpret what problems exist in this new interactive exhibit, which includes the front half of a new car, encourages visitors to sharpen their listening skills by having them focus on sound as a source of information about an underlying problem, just as a trained mechanic does. With practice, listeners can distinguish the auditory nuances that distinguish a sticking valve from a bad set of brakes. And they also hone another kind of skill: translating imitations of sounds, made by customers' lips and tongues, into the metallic clicks and whirrs of pistons, calipers, and cams.

The Majesty of Christmas
Music

To celebrate the holiday season in December of 2007, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra (PBO) presents a true Baroque Christmas from the courts of Dresden and Venice in the 1660s. Guest conductor Konrad Junghänel, founder of the unique vocal group Cantus Cölln, makes his West coast and PBO debuts, leading the Orchestra and Philharmonia Chorale. This concert includes Christmas music by composers who felt the influence of their Italian contemporaries and who also influenced each other. Heinrich Schütz’s compositions show the influence of his teacher Gabrieli and of Monteverdi; and Johann Rosenmüller, a composer instrumental in the transmission of Italian styles to northern Europe, was also influenced by the work of Schütz. The program in December will feature the Philharmonia Chorale in performances of Schutz’s Weihnachtshistorie (Christmas Story) as well as Rosenmuller’s Magnificat, among other works.
