San Francisco Union Square
Union
Square is considered the heart of San Francisco. The area is serviced by a
busy cable car line and is a hub of fine shopping, theatre, cocktail bars
and the old French Quarter.
The
area bustles day and night with all sorts of people, from business and
shoppers to artists and panhandlers. Everybody is here.
Shopping is excellent and includes large and elegant department stores
like Saks, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales and Macy’s, as well as luxury
specialty stores like Williams Sonoma, Tiffany and Chanel.
The
name Union Square is actually given to a park at the center of the
district covering about a one block radius. This area is a ceremonial
meeting place for people and visiting dignitaries as well as a place for
protests, demonstrations, concerts and the annual Christmas Tree and
Menorah.
Union
Square is a good spot for happy hour cocktails, quick and inexpensive
lunches, or a place to pick up San Francisco souvenirs.
If you
are a luxury traveler and you prefer being at the center of everything,
you’ll be pleased to find some gorgeous hotels here too. These would
include the Grand Hyatt, The Villa Florence and the St Francis hotel.
(These however are not quite as upscale as Nob Hill)
Value
travelers will find some tasteful and affordable boutique style hotels in
this district and also nicely priced restaurants cocktail bars and good
access to public transit. Family travelers will appreciate the central
location, shopping and dining, but the place may not be avant-garde enough
for the Bohemian traveler. (Too many big brands, not enough diversity).
