San Francisco Mission District
The Mission is the largest
district in San Francisco and is home to most of the city’s Latin
population.
Highlights of the area
include the unusual and colorful murals lining the streets. Most of these
have Mexican and El Salvadorian roots and cultural themes.
The Mission is also home to
a newer group of hipsters and artists. As a result the area is rich with
cultural and artistic centers including galleries, studios and spaces for
artistic endeavors and performance arts. Points of interest include the
Mission Cultural Center for the Latino Arts, Galeria de la Raza, Theatre
Rhinoceros, the Mission School and The Roxie, (the oldest operating movie
theatre in San Francisco and also an excellent venue for independent
films, repertory films and regularly scheduled local film festivals.
The Mission District has now
come to be known as “New Bohemia” and we recommend it as an excellent
place to visit if you consider yourself a Bohemian Traveler or even a
Luxury Bohemian Traveler. This district is probably not your first choice
if you are a traditional luxury, value or family traveler, because there
is a hint of simple street crime here and the area has a natural rough and
tumble feel, but if you are interested in these type of arts, unusual
ethnic foods and cultural diversity this colorful neighborhood is worth a
visit.
The area is also filled with
some excellent restaurants.
