San Francisco Haight Ashbury
The
Haight Ashbury District, or as the locals call it, “The Haight” has long
been known as a hip Bohemian district. The district became especially
famous in America and around the world for it’s important role as the
center of the hippie movement during the 1960’s. Illegal drugs,
psychedelic rock, and the summer of love in 1967 all contributed to this
new kind of subculture attracting everyone from the Grateful Dead to Janis
Joplin to Jefferson Airplane who all took up residence here.
Today
the Haight is still considered a center for alternative lifestyles, but it
has also evolved into a slightly more mainstream district with property
values in greater demand and larger groups of urban professionals moving
in.
However, Bohemian travelers will be attracted by a thriving community of
independent businesses, cafes, restaurants. If you are interested is
specialty music a visit to America’s largest new and used record store
called Amoeba Music is a must see. Other vendors selling unusual,
eclectic, organic and avant-garde goods are in abundance here. This area is also highly recommended to
those families traveling with teenagers.
